I would say that your attitude and reaction were very appropriate in the situation. Parents and grandparents were in their right too.

Well I think if the person doesn't notice it then it isn't a problem really. However when a person notices it and seems that he does mind that you take a picture of him then I guess you should show him/her the picture and tell what why you are doing this.
This happened to me yesterday, I took a picture of a child (boy) who was letting a artist make a cartoon sketch of him. I took a few pictures of the boy and the artist and walked away. When suddenly a angry father and grandmother came to me to ask me why I took a picture of her grandson and his son. I told him what I did, that I was a amateur street photographer and found it nice combination since the sketch was pretty funny. Even so the father and grandmother asked me to delete the picture and so I did. Making sure that they were watching with me as I deleted the pictures. I can understand perfectly with all those crazy and dirty wacko's running around. If I had a child and somebody would take a picture of him/her then I would have done the same thing.
So I guess if you are making picture's you should be extra carefull about childeren. They are a very sensitive subject.~
.Perhaps I'm just paranoid.... but I worry about the security of the images posted here. It was easy to copy and save your Waiting for Henri image, so we may be limited to very small (and thus rather useless for other people) files.... Just food for thought.
