I have evolved a digital image workflow using mostly Lightroom (LR) with some occasional help from PhotoShop Express (PSE).
1. Import the camera raw files and convert them to DNG. I have a preset that dials in basic sharpening and noise reduction, and a Metadata preset to add copyright, usage rights, etc., to all the images. I also have a renumbering preset to make my overall numbering scheme logical for me.
2. Add any caption or other metadata to the image.
3. Create a Virtual Copy of the image (this lets me go back to the color image easily).
4. Working on the Virtual Copy, I use HSL B&W for black and white conversions. This lets you use the various color sliders for effects similar to using color filters on a black and white film camera.
5. Use the Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light and Blacks sliders to set the overall tonal range.
6. Sometimes use the Clarity slider to add something like Unsharp Masking in PSE, or use negative values to create an interesting diffusion effect.
7. Modify the tone curve as necessary to get the tonal values the way I want them. This is a little like Ansel Adams Zone system.
7a. You might need to revisit all of the above adjustments to fine tune the image to your liking.
8. Export the image as a TIFF and/or JPG with whatever degree of compression and sizing you prefer. This depends on the ultimate use of the image (publication, a print or posting on line).
I highly recommend this book: "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book", by Martin Evening. Should be available through Amazon.
Hope all of this helps rather than confuses....
