Cameras / Re: Do I Need A Leica?
« Last post by anne.schmidt on October 05, 2011, 10:11:10 pm »
You just need to have a camera to do street photography. Unless you buy an old one, as I did, Leicas M are very expensive. They are also very good but there's nothing more pitiful than a Leica that costs 5000 $ (without the lens) in the hands of photographers that have no talent. ;)

So any camera will do, even a cheap one.

Workflows / Re: Black and White Conversion
« Last post by aristos on October 05, 2011, 09:00:54 pm »
My workflow is something like this (I use LR and PSE).

1. Import RAW images as DNG.
2. Make virtual copy.
3. Using own preset in LR. Preset desaturates all colours.
4. Or using simple greyscale in LR (this is faster).
5. Manual adjustments using sliders in Tone section: a) Exposure, b) Blacks, c) Brightness, and d) Contrast. Sometimes additional adjustments using Recovery and/or Fill Light.
6. Export from and downsizing to jpg. from LR to PSE for sharpening, final adjustments.
7. Save for web.

That is basically it.

Thanks for reading  :).

Workflows / Black and White Conversion

Many street photographers work in black and white. In the digital age pictures are often shot in colour and converted later. Please share you work flow telling how you do this.

Social Responsibility? / Does Street Photographers Have A Social Responsibility?

This is, imo, a very important question that deserves to be discussed: Does street photographers have a social responsibility?  If so, should that responsibly be manifest in their work as street photographers?

What is your opinion?

Ok... I'll go on my usual soapbox.... :)

Leicas are very fine cameras and are well suited to street photography...... if the camera suits the photographer (and his/her budget). I feel that anything that works comfortably for the individual and is capable of putting a technically good image on film or a sensor is just fine for street photography. I'm always amused at the people who come up to me and say, "That's a really nice camera - I bet it takes great pictures". I feel that it's the mind behind the machine that sees and takes the "great pictures".
